The 42-year-old Umamu Estate is an integral part of the Australian heritage. A brainchild of Chief Executive Charmaine Saw, the vineyard features plantings dating back to 1978.
The Family Vineyard Located 10km east from Margaret River, Western Australia, the vineyard features white varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay. The red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz. The vineyard is composed of different blocks, each featuring its own character and traits and thus managed as separate entities. It is viewed as an ecosystem which includes the vines, soils, cover crops, insects, microflora and native fauna which inhabit the area. Charmaine joined the family business to fulfil a dream of creating a family label. The winery’s vision was to utilise the balance of Margaret River with its rugged terrain and temperate climate. Rated a 5-star producer by James Halliday, the winery aims to harvest physiologically ripe fruit, considering the balance between perfumes, colours, tannins, flavours, acids and sugar maturity. The wines produced have a sense of style reflecting mainly the site and season, with the background signature on style. In addition, a blend of French oak barrels provides texture to the wines without dominating the flavour or structure. The winery believes that the healthy balanced grapevines, managed for the desired wine styles should always yield high-quality fruit. Attaining this balance in the vine requires that the ecosystem is in harmony and the winery works to achieve this in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. Vision & Mission Umamu Estate is inspired by the philosophy of balance & contentment. The first vintage was released in 2005 with wines like Hallmark Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz. Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a renowned Margaret River blend learnt from Bordeaux. The Cabernet Merlot is inspired by their dear friend Aunty May of Chateau Pichon Longeville and the Shiraz is a more elegant style. Over the last few years, the winery’s focus is more on the Australian market and consumer events. It is currently running two labels, UMAMU label and the Hallmark range which features a red seal to express the utmost quality.
